After one week without alcohol, have you noticed you are sleeping better?
For me, this was has been of the BIG benefits, blissful sleep!
Alcohol might help you to get off to sleep, because of its sedative properties, but your sleep is disturbed as your liver enzymes metabolise the alcohol. Your liver is working harder and needs to keep your body in a more wakeful state in order to do the work it needs to do to rid your body of the alcohol.
The things we do to our body hey?
How does alcohol affect your sleep patterns?
With regular drinking, people spend more time in deep sleep and less time in REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is the essential restorative phase of sleep that occurs in cycles throughout the night during which your body naturally takes care of all the functions in organs and restores cells.
Without good REM sleep, you will feel tired the next day, even if you sleep in longer.
Drinking more frequently disturbs your sleep
Not only will you be up to pee more frequently, alcohol is a diuretic, which encourages your body to excrete water, so you will sweat more too, leaving you dehydrated.
It can also cause you to snore more. Because it relaxes the muscles in your throat, constricting the airways and causing vibration.
