Five tips to overcome burnout
Burnout is more than just mental exhaustion, it affects our entire organism, as we go into fight, flight, freeze, fawn mode, with our bodies releasing the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol. These chemicals are designed to activate our bodies to react. Blood and oxygen goes to the extremities, so there is less oxygen available for our brain, which is why we can therefore think about survival, but not much more. That's why we feel mentally burnt out.
Five tips:
2. Without overwhelming yourself further, think of some easy and gentle ways you could better treat your physical body to improve the symptoms. Now isn't the time for an arduous workout (unless that's already your thing), but do move your body in ways that you enjoy, spend time in nature, eat unprocessed foods and drink water. Spend some time in the sunshine (safely, of course) to get a good dose of vitamin D.
4. Breathe. Focusing on your breathing is the fastest way to restore your stress hormones to homeostasis; in other words, the natural chemical balance of our body. When you are stressed, you will find that your breathing is fast and shallow. Try this simple box-breathing technique to regulate it: Imagine a square or a box in your mind's eye. Follow the four lines of the square in your imagination as you breathe in, hold, breathe out, hold; repeat. You don't have to change your breathing, simply observe it. Notice how much better you feel after a few rounds!
